…And Free Agency Frenzy AAAAWAY!

AUTHOR: Susan s-k Lee | IN: About Me, Contact Me, Draft, Ducks, Off-Season/Pre-Season, Popular, Post-Season, Regular Season, Roster | COMMENTS: None Yet

The skinny so far:
Goaltender Jean-Philippe Levasseur has been signed to a 1-year extension. It’ll be interesting to see if he gets called up to play more than one game this year or if he’ll be able to nab the number 2 spot. I’m hoping that now that he’s been resigned, he will be more inclined to submit to an interview!
The other two free agents who have resigned are defenseman Sheldon Brookbank (2-year extension) and center Kyle Chipchura (1-year extension).
Unrestricted players are Teemu Selanne, Saku Koivu, Aaron Ward, Brian Salcido, Joey MacDonald, Kyle Calder, Brennan Evans and Ryan Donally. Of course, [...]

McElhinney-who? No More!

AUTHOR: Susan s-k Lee | IN: Ducks, Regular Season, Roster | COMMENTS: None Yet

Goaltender Curtis McElhinney, the lanky lefty from London, ON, was solid in his third straight win last night against the Avs – a wonderful romp of a game that featured Scott Niedermayer proving the old dog still knows a few tricks, Mr. 600 becoming Mr. 601 and bringing the Ducks to seven points behind Colorado for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Picked up in a trade with Calgary for netminder Vesa Toskala in early March 2010, McElhinney seemed at first glance to be an odd selection considering in the 2008-2009 season he failed to win in his first [...]

Whither Hiller?

AUTHOR: Susan s-k Lee | IN: Ducks, Regular Season, Roster | COMMENTS: None Yet

With the season winding down and no point in exacerbating Jonas Hiller’s back injury, the Ducks have called up Jean-Philippe Levasseur as back-up for Curtis McElhinney.
Yeah, I know, I hear all the Hiller fans asking “who are these guys?”  I’ll have more on C.McE tomorrow, but for now, a little about the strapping young lad, JPL (get it?).
When the Iowa Chops went buh-bye, Levasseur was loaned to the then Edmonton Oilers AHL affiliate team, the Springfield Falcons in December 2009 (The Falcons recently joined forces with the Columbus Blue Jackets).  Since his debut with the Falcons, Levasseur has played in [...]

Ducks Flip “Chops” for “Crunch”

AUTHOR: Susan s-k Lee | IN: Ducks, Regular Season | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

Ever since the Iowa Chops shuttered their ice, the Anaheim Ducks had been searching for an AHL team to affiliate with and after successful (and brief) negotiations, they landed the more stable and successful Syracuse Crunch.
Previously affiliated with the Dallas Stars, The Chops had only been a viable team for barely a year when allegations arose that ownership had taken out a loan and used the franchise as collateral.  A big no-no according to AHL rules.
In addition, according to the Ducks, the Chops owed Anaheim “significant money.”  Attempts at digging for more details have not been successful as the Chops [...]

Could This be Turning Point for Ducks?

AUTHOR: Omar Zaman | IN: Regular Season | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Ducks come-from-behind victory against the Stars could be the most important game of the season, and there’s still 52 games left to play.
Not only did they score four unanswered goals after trailing 3-0 in the second period, but there were some important events in tonight’s game that could light a fire under the Ducks and get them playing on a more consistent basis.
The first was the emergence of a second line. It’s easy to see that Dan Sexton provided more than a boost to a struggling Ducks team in desperate need of scoring from someone other than the first [...]

Ducks Find A Way to Lose

AUTHOR: Omar Zaman | IN: Game Recaps, Regular Season | COMMENTS: None Yet

Another game, another loss for the Ducks. This one came in a shootout but was the result of the same formula we’ve seen all too often for the Ducks this season. They had everything going for them: they scored the first goal of the game early, they took the lead into the third period, they played disciplined, Jonas Hiller played well, and they had a two goal lead with five minutes to play in regulation. But they still found a way to lose.
The Ducks scored the first goal of the game on a laser shot by Joffrey Lupul, who was [...]

Chipchura, Sexton Expected to Play Tonight

AUTHOR: Omar Zaman | IN: Regular Season | COMMENTS: None Yet

Kyle Chipchura’s visa issues have been resolved much quicker than anticipated and he joined the Ducks this morning for the morning skate. I expect him to play a great, high-energy game for the Ducks as he tries to impress in his first action for the team.
In place of the injured Teemu Selanne the Ducks recalled Dan Sexton, who impressed in training camp and was one of the last ones to be cut. Sexton pretty much dominated in the ECHL before being assigned to the AHL where’s he’s only played in five games. Sexton has earned this opportunity for the Ducks and may [...]
